Our family started selling firewood as a way to get rid of the dead ash trees that were in our yard when we moved to the property where we live now about six years ago. I wanted to teach my son about being an entrepreneur and show him how to run his own business. On that day we had no tools necessary for splitting wood. Since this was going to be my sons business it was going to be his responsible to buy the tools necessary to run his business. Reluctantly he grabbed his stack of money and headed to the Home Depot to buy a splitting maul. On our way to Home Depot our neighbor was having their annual yard sale that we like to go to. As luck would have it they had a splitting maul, full size axe, forest axe, sledge hammer and spiltting wedge for sale. We purchased the stack of tools for $22.00 and we were in the firewood business.

Preparing firewood became a fun thing that we would do as a family. It would allow our children to use the tractor and other fun machines around our property.

During my sons Junior year in high school he took an Entrepreneur class and he started asking me all kinds of questions about building a business. He also had a revived interest in motocross racing and he was riding a motorcycle that was too small for him. Like all good fathers I encouraged him to put together a plan for him to buy an upgraded motorcycle. The upgraded motorcycle would cost $ 6000 and he would have to do the work and save the money to buy it. His idea was to start delivering firewood. Since I have experience in sales and marketing we created this website to help promote and help with booking delivery orders. This was the beginning of Liberty Wood LLC. Not having a truck we had to be resourceful and use our minivan and a trailer to start making deliveries. To meet the volume requirements of the deliveries it would require a tremendous amount of time splitting cords of firewood with a maul or axe. It also started to wear on our shoulder, back, hands and wrists. We took some of our earning and purchased a log splitter. While this set him back a bit on his savings goal it was a necessary investment for the business. After about six months of hard work and consistent saving he had the money he need to purchase his new motorcycle.

We have since upgraded to commercial grade chainsaws and wood splitters as well as purchasing a truck to help with deliveries.

In the fall of August 2022 my son started college so his earnings are now going to much more fun things like college tuition. Since then we have recruited other helpers to help move and stack the firewood to keep the supply of firewood available to our customers.
